Azle: best for, and think twice if
Best for
- Buyers who want lake access with an inpatient hospital in the city: Azle sits on Eagle Mountain Lake, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle is a Level IV trauma center at 108 Denver Trail.
- Buyers who want a city-run senior center: the Azle Adult Activity Center serves adults 60 and over, with a hot lunch at a suggested voluntary donation of $2.50 per meal.
- Buyers who prefer owner-occupied single-family housing: 80.6% of Azle's units are detached homes and 71.1% of occupied units are owner-occupied in the 2019-2023 estimates.
Think twice if
- Buyers should note the rising city rate: the Council voted 4-1 on August 24, 2026 to ratify $0.6756288 per $100, about 8.2% above the 2025 rate of $0.6246927.
- Think twice if lake-level swings concern you: the sources cites flood storage above conservation level, the 1980 drought exposing intake pipes and the 1981 flood; shoreline lots need a flood-zone check.
- Buyers with a Parker County parcel should confirm the taxing units: the city spans Tarrant and Parker counties, and a Parker parcel is taxed by Parker County at 0.28507 and its hospital district.
These points restate facts from this page's sources. They are not ratings, and your own budget, health and family situation decide what fits.
Retiring in Azle: overview
Azle is in Tarrant County, Texas, within the Fort Worth & Western Metroplex region.
Azle is a small city on Eagle Mountain Lake, and the Census Bureau's 2020 place file lists it in Parker and Tarrant counties. The City of Azle's Property Information page confirms the split: it says the city encompasses Tarrant and Parker counties and gives separate appraisal-district contacts for each. In the Census Bureau's 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-year estimates Azle has 13,734 residents, a median age of 35.9, and 15.4% of residents (2,117 people) aged 65 or older. The school district named Azle ISD is a separate matter: the Comptroller's statewide school-district file lists Azle ISD in Parker, Tarrant and Wise counties, so a parcel's county, school district and appraisal district should each be confirmed on its own.
Azle suits a buyer who wants a smaller town, lake access and a hospital and senior center close by. It is not a destination built around age-restricted communities. For the wider area, see the Fort Worth and west Metroplex region and the neighboring city of Fort Worth.
Cost of living in Azle
The 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-year estimates give Azle a median household income of $81,200, a median value of owner-occupied homes of $263,800 and a median gross rent of $1,341 a month, with 71.1% of occupied housing units owner-occupied. Median monthly owner costs are $1,921 for homes with a mortgage and $746 for homes without one. Among Azle households, 29.8% receive Social Security income and 23.6% receive retirement income. These are medians for all households over a period ending in 2023, not the price of a home today.
The city also lists a link to register for EyeonWater among its quick links. Check the city's notices for current utility billing arrangements.
Property taxes in Azle
Azle's rate is rising. The Tarrant Appraisal District 2025 rate table lists the City of Azle at $0.6246927 per $100 of taxable value, made up of $0.5429927 for maintenance and operations and $0.0817 for debt service, and the Comptroller's 2025 file lists the same city rate for Parker County. The city's FY 2026-2027 budget page says the City Council voted 4-1 on August 24, 2026 to ratify what it calls the de minimus tax rate of $0.6756288 per $100 of valuation, and its notice lists the no-new-revenue rate at $0.6487141 and the voter-approval rate at $0.7108630. As our arithmetic, the increase over the 2025 rate is $0.0509361 per $100, or about 8.2%. The same table lists Azle ISD at $1.0850, made up of $0.7358 for maintenance and operations and $0.3492 for debt service, Tarrant County at $0.1862, the Tarrant County Hospital District at $0.1650, Tarrant County College at $0.11228 and the Tarrant Regional Water District at $0.0265.
Who handles a parcel depends on the county. The city says that for the Tarrant County portion the Tarrant Appraisal District is responsible for appraisal and exemption administration, and that for the Parker County portion the Parker County Appraisal District at 1108 Santa Fe Drive, Weatherford, handles those tasks. It adds that the Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector collects property taxes for both. A Parker County parcel is taxed by Parker County rather than Tarrant County: the Comptroller's file lists Parker County at $0.28507 and the Parker County Hospital District at $0.08407. The units that apply to a particular parcel, including any emergency services district, come from the tax statement.
The city, county and school units each set their own exemptions, and the appraisal district applies them. The Tarrant Appraisal District table includes local-option columns for Azle, but check the current amounts for the city and for Azle ISD with the appraisal district for your county before relying on any figure. Exemptions reduce taxable value rather than paying a bill, and the school-tax ceiling that begins at 65 is conditional. Read the homestead and age-65 guide and the appraisal district guide for the rules, and see Texas retirement taxes for the statewide context.

Insurance and risk in Azle
The lake shapes both the appeal and the risk. The Tarrant Regional Water District's Eagle Mountain Lake update explains that its conservation level is the permitted level of water held in the lake, and that any amount above it is used for the temporary storage of flood waters and must be released downstream. The update, which says its automated readings were not current, estimated the level at between 649.4 and 649.5 feet above mean sea level when it was posted and directs readers to the district's flood hotline and lake-level portal. The city's own history page records both extremes: in the 1980 drought the lake level fell and left the raw water intake pipes exposed, and when the lake flooded in the fall of 1981 the floating pump platform was submerged. A property near the shoreline or a creek warrants a flood-zone check on the specific address through the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and the county floodplain office, and standard homeowner policies generally exclude flood.
Hail and severe wind are the other practical concern. The National Weather Service Fort Worth office's review of the late-April 2026 storms records a confirmed EF1 tornado in Parker County and severe straight-line wind damage across the Agnes and Springtown areas of Parker County, hail up to softball size across North Texas, and an EF3 tornado in Palo Pinto and Parker counties with estimated winds up to 145 mph. Its review of the April 11, 2016 hail storm records a 5.25-inch stone and more than $300 million in damage in Wylie. The Texas Department of Insurance advises asking whether wind and hail carry a separate deductible and notes that some policies switch from replacement cost to actual cash value as a roof ages. On wildfire, the Texas A&M Forest Service offers a risk assessment portal by location that is worth checking for wooded or larger lots. See the hail, wildfire, drought, heat and outage guide for the statewide picture.
Healthcare access in Azle
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle, at 108 Denver Trail, says it offers care close to home for Northwest Tarrant and Parker counties and is designated as a Level IV Trauma Center and a Level III Stroke Center. Its site lists advanced imaging, digestive health, physical therapy and rehabilitation, including aquatic therapy and orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation programs. It is a community hospital, so complex specialty care often means traveling to the larger systems described on the Fort Worth page.
The City of Azle runs the Azle Adult Activity Center for adults 60 and over at 601 Southeast Parkway. The center serves a hot lunch prepared by Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County with a suggested voluntary donation of $2.50 per meal and says no one is denied a meal for inability to pay; meals must be ordered by 9:30 a.m. the day before. It lists monthly birthday celebrations, meet-up events around the Metroplex, informational seminars, Senior Medicare Patrol scam information and an annual resource fair. Hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; call 817-444-0070 to reserve a meal. Confirm which hospitals and physicians are in your Medicare plan network, because network often decides where care is used.
Climate in Azle
Azle shares the north central Texas humid subtropical climate. NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for the Dallas Fort Worth airport station, used here only as a regional proxy, show a normal July daily high of 95.6 degrees Fahrenheit and August of 95.8, and a normal January low of 36.1. May is the wettest spring month at a normal 4.78 inches. Summers are long and hot, and the spring storm season brings hail, wind and occasional tornadoes. See the summer heat guide, and plan for power interruptions in heat and winter storms.
Lifestyle and recreation in Azle
The City of Azle's site lists a library, a golf course, a historical museum, a chamber of commerce, Eagle Mountain Lake, parks and recreation, and the senior center among its residents and visitors pages. The Tarrant Regional Water District describes its role as providing a reliable water supply, flood protection and recreational opportunities. Water levels change, so check the district's lake-level information before planning boating.
Azle is more a place to live near family, the lake and the senior center than a resort-style retirement setting. For lake and golf living built around age-targeted communities, compare Granbury.
Housing in Azle
Azle has 5,367 housing units, of which 80.6% are single-family detached homes and 7.1% were vacant in the 2019-2023 estimates. The stock is spread across decades: 18.2% of units were built in the 1980s, 15.3% in the 1970s and 12.7% in the 1990s, compared with 12.6% in the 2000s, 14.0% in the 2010s and 3.4% in 2020 or later. With 71.1% owner-occupancy, the housing is mostly owner-occupied single-family homes. Older houses reward an inspection of roof, plumbing and electrical systems, and lots near the shoreline or a creek warrant a flood-zone check.
Water supply
The City of Azle operates its own water treatment plant, and its Water Production page says Eagle Mountain Lake is the raw water source and that the plant has a capacity of 6 million gallons per day, processed by conventional methods including removal of turbidity, disinfection, filtration and post-disinfection. The city's history page says it contracted with the Tarrant County Water Utilities District No. 1 for the purchase of water from the lake, that a new intake structure built in 1982 was designed to assure an ample supply even in a drought, and that an expansion begun in 2003 brought treatment capacity to 6 million gallons daily. Because the city draws from one lake, ask about the city's current drought stage when comparing Azle with cities that buy treated water from Fort Worth.
Getting to airports and care
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is the main commercial airport for the Metroplex, and its own site lists parking, ground transportation and airline information. Texas Health Azle is inside the city. No drive times are given here; measure the route from the lot you are considering to the airport and the hospital at the hours you would travel.
